ASK DR. LIEBERMAN

Question:

For treating yeast, how long do you have to take Nystatin and low long until you see results?

Answer:

Treating yeast infections varies with location.   Oral thrush - 7 to 14 days with Nystatin but 3 days with Diflucan.  Similarly with the problem of yeast vaginitis.  But for the average patient who has yeast colonizing his bowel, the normal reservoir, you may have to treat for 3 months with Nystatin and 6 weeks with a combination of Diflucan and Sporonox.  Recolonizing with healthy bacteria, use of multiple formulas of probiotics, is essential to achieve success.

Question:

If you have Candida, what are the antibiotics that are safer to take?

Answer:

Antibiotics which are not broad spectrum, such as erythomycin are safer for people with Candida.

Question:

How can we tell if the reaction we observe is an allergic response to sugar, yeast, etc, or Candida overgrowth?  If the Candida gets treated, will allergic reactions become less severe?

Answer:

We can't always tell if the reaction we observe is an allergic response to sugar, yeast, etc., or Candida overgrowth.  This is a problem in establishing causation.  It appears that you must use both yeast elimination drugs such as Nizoral, Diflucan, Sporonox, or Nystatin as well as elimination of yeast from diet in order to really control the problem.  Experience again confirms that when one reduces the total stress load such as yeast overload, allergies often improve as do many other medical problems.  The principle to always remember is to reduce the total load!

Question:

If you have a yeast infection during any time in your pregnancy, can the baby be born with Candida?

Answer:

Absolutely, yes.  the Candida manifests itself as thrush usually three to four days after birth.  The most effective method of treatment is Nystatin Powder.

Question:

Can you tell us a natural Candida treatment for children?  How long should you take the treatment?

Answer:

Our experience dictates that reducing the total yeast load requires the combination of a systemic antifungal drug, and enteric topical drug and diet elimination.  A reasonable plan for a young child is proper doses of either Nizoral or Diflucan.   Nystatin powder to swish and swallow and a low carbohydrate and yeast diet.   Three months is a reasonable therapeutic trial.  More natural compounds such as grapefruit seed extract, butyric acid, Pau-de-arco tea work well in prevention and maintenance but fall short in my experience for initial treatment.

Question:

What is the involvement of hormones in the Candida problem?

Answer:

Yeasts and Candida albicans in patients cross react with the body's endocrine system resulting in the well recognized syndrome first described by the late Phyllis Saider - APICH (Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy Immune Disregulation Candidiasis Hypersensitivity Syndrome).  Although all of the endocrine glands can be involved, the thyroid, adrenal and ovaries seem to take the greatest hit.  when the thyroid is involved, the characteristic triad of overwhelming fatigue, depression and short-term memory loss occurs.

Prevention and treatment requires control of dysbiosis or the imbalance of the normal microbiological flora of the intestine. In addition, it is known that women are more vulnerable to Candidiasis during the premenstrual phase of their cycle.

Question:

How is Candida connected with learning disabilities/ADD?

Answer:

Yeast and fungi produce toxins called mycotoxins.  These are capable of altering many of the systems of the body independently of the autoimmune process described above.   Classically, yeast results in a spacey sensation with loss of concentration and confusion -- the very symptoms of the Attention Deficit Disorder.

Question:

What ingredients are in FOS?  What specifically does it do for the body?  Can you bake with it, or is there a limit of how much to use?  Is there anything an allergic person can be sensitive to?  Is FOS safe for someone with a sugar allergy?

Answer:

FOS is naturally present on almost all vegetable and plant matter as a protective mechanism for the plant kingdom.  It is not digested by humans because of the molecule's large size, thus it lends food a sweet taste without disrupting blood sugar levels or adding calories to the diet.  FOS encourages growth of the normal healthy flora of the bowel while inhibiting growth of Candida.
