Food Allergy

By Dr Crook

Allergy to a specific food or foods can cause you or your child to develop symptoms of various sourts.  Yet, you may not recogn9ize such an allergy unless you carefully search for it.

1.  TYPES OF FOOD ALLERGY
a)    Obvious Food Allergy:  As the name implies, you know when you're bothered by this        sort of an allergy.  Such an allergy is often caused by relatively uncommon foods, such as fish, strawberries, cashew nuts or lobster.  However, it may be cased by any food, including egg, citrus, or chocolate.  Obvious food allergy often makes you break out in a rash, sneeze, wheeze, swell or give you a headache.
b)     Hidden or Unsuspected Food Allergy:* This sort of allergy is usually caused by foods you eat every day, including milk, corn, wheat, legumes, chocolate, citrus, egg and sugar.  You seem to develop symptoms from eating these foods gradually ... so gradually that the relationship of your symptoms to the foods is rarely recognized.  Hidden allergy is often caused by your favorite food or foods.
2.   SYMPTOMS ** WHICH MAY BE FOUND IN ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH HIDDEN FOOD ALLERGIES
Recurrent or persistent colds Aching in legs and other muscles
Coughing all winter Bowel disorders
Wheezing Sluggishness
Irritability Mouth breathing
Pale color (although not anemic) Excessive sweating
Puffiness of face Hard to live with
Suffy nose ("sinus") Hyperactivity
Recurrent nose bleed Poor school performance
Stomachache "Emotional problems"
Headache Sleep excessively
Urinary problems Sots on the tongue

* Since immunological explanations of these food related symptoms often cannot be identified, nay physicians refer to them as "adverse food reactions", "food hypersensitivities" or "food intolerances"
