ASK DR LEIBERMAN

Question:

Have you seen significant improvement using essential fatty acids with ADD?  Do you agree that certain supplements need to be used with the fatty acids?   What combination essential fatty acids do you use?  Are there any EFAs that can make ADD worse?

Answer

The British have an Association dealing specifically with Essential Fatty Acid deficiency and Attention Deficit Disorder.  They are convinced that this is a major cause of the disorder and that treatment with EFA's is beneficial - but which one?  The literature suggests that is the Omega 3 fatty acids, the ones derived from fish oil, are the best.  Flaxseed, however, also contains substantial amounts.   EFA analysis can be done from a patient's blood and specific deficiencies identified.

Question:

My daughter has these tiny red and white bumps on her cheeks and on her arms.  What could be the cause?  If it's an essential fatty acid deficiency, what dosage should I give her?

Answer:

Red and white bumps on the face and cheeks sounds like keratosis follecularies.  this chronic condition is caused primarily by essential fatty acid deficiency, but also by a Vitamin A deficiency.  Flax seed, which is linseed oil, should be given in a tsp. to tbs. sized dose daily and Vitamin A, 5000 units a day.

Question:

My son has had blood work done, and it shows that he's not absorbing nutrients especially the essential fatty acids.  What causes this?  Do you have any suggestions for this?

Answer:

There are three reasons why a person has insufficient nutrients:

  1. diet doesn't provide an adequate amount;

  2. the person isn't absorbing properly, and

  3. the person has nutritional dependency, a genetically determined need for greater amounts than the usual RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance).

When it comes to Essential Fatty Acids, most people tend to be deficient.   they just don' take enough in their diets.  Therefore, supplementation is essential.  Flax oil is probably the cheapest and best source of both the Omega 3 and 5 fatty acids.  It can either be swallowed or rubbed into the skin.
